14 advertising complaints upheld in Ireland – including SOSU lash ad, Lidl paddle board ad and SIMS IVF clinic

SOME 14 advertising complaints were upheld against brands in Ireland across social media, email and online.

The advertisements were found to be in breach of the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland code, according to their latest Complaints Committee bulletin.

The complaints upheld included Lidl, SOSU by Suzanne Jackson and SIMS IVF clinic.

Among the complaints were one upheld against a post on social media influencer Suzanne Jackson’s SOSU brand Instagram account.

It was upheld under the ASAI’s “misleading” catagory.

The post featured a fashion model advertising SOSU’s mascara and kohl pencil.

The ad said: “How stunning does (name of model) look wearing our Eye Voltage Mascara and black kohl pencil. Tap to shop the look or visit…”

However, the complaint to the ASAI said that the post suggested that the eye look with the mascara and kohl pencil product – but the model was seen wearing false lashes.

Despite the brand’s claim they had not insinuated that the model was not wearing false eyelashes – the ASAI said it was relevant information that should have been included in the post.

Bargain supermarket Lidl had a complaint upheld against it for an advertisement that featured a man on a paddle board not wearing a life jacket.

The ASAI said that although there was water safety information included on the ad, the image “could encourage an unsafe practice”.

Another complaint upheld was against the SIMS IVF clinic who claimed in an advertisement that they were “Ireland’s No 1 IVF Clinic”.

The advertisers responded to the complaint by saying that it considered itself to be the number one clinic based on facts – such as market share, number of doctors, embryologists, medical and support staff.

The ASAI however said: “in the circumstances, (it) considered that the claim could not be substantiated”.

A number social media posts and website ads at Appelgreen fuel stations had four complaints against them.

A sponsered article on a website featured the headline: “This plant-based chicken fillet roll is the vegan alternative we’ve been waiting for.”

One compliant, which was not upheld, said it was misleading to describe a product as “vegan chicken”.

This was because they believed it to be in breach of EU law to associate animal product with vegan food.

However, the ASAI responded that the EU directive refers only to dairy products.

A further complaint considered that consumers associate the word ‘chicken’ with meat and that that made the ad misleading.

Applegreen said that in regard to online article, there was an editorial error.

The influencers involved used the correct term, however they also said “vegan chicken fillet roll” which was approved by mistake by the social media team.

The ASAI upheld the complaint but said that the press release provided to influencers only included the correct term “chicken-free fillet roll”.
