A same-sex female couple have won the right for them both to be named as legal parents of their children after five years of campaigning.
Ranae von Meding, 33, chief executive of the pressure group Equality for Children, appeared at Dublin district court yesterday where her wife, Audrey Rooney, 41, was recognised as a parent of their two daughters, Ava, aged five, and two-year-old Arya.
Both children were born through reciprocal IVF, where the egg is from one parent but the other gives birth. In their case Audrey’s eggs and a sperm donor were used and Ranae gave birth. This form of IVF was not available in Ireland at the time, so the couple went to Spain.
