I’m pregnant and want to name my son after my dead husband – but my sister’s stolen it for her little boy

HAVING someone steal the name you intended for your child is highly likely to get on your nerves, right?

Well, if you thought that would be annoying, think again – as one woman has taken to Reddit to share her story of how her sister stole her child’s baby name.

But not only is it a stolen name, the woman revealed that she was beside herself when she discovered her sister named her newborn son after her dead husband.

Her sister, who she refers to using the pseudonym Kayla, doesn’t understand why her decision is “really awful” and doesn’t think that she should change her baby’s name.

The grieving widow is herself eight months pregnant and tragically lost her army husband, Rodrigo, three months ago.

The woman had wanted to call her baby Alex, with Rodrigo as his middle name, as a tribute to her late husband.

But her younger sister Kayla had never discussed baby names with her or any other member of their family beforehand and so the woman was left devastated to hear that her sister had named her son after him.

Turning to Reddit users for advice, the unnamed 30-year-old woman said: “I am 8 months pregnant with my first child, it’s a boy.

“My husband Rodrigo died in the army 3 months ago.

“My sister Kayla just gave birth five days ago.

“She and her BF live with our parents, and I temporarily moved in as well (it’s a very big house) because I hated being alone and my parents have been very supportive.

“We were going to name the baby Alex, and I am still going with that, plus Rodrigo as a middle name.

“My sister never discussed baby names with me or the family, she just always said she loves Hispanic names (we are white Americans, my husband was Mexican).

“Yesterday she came back home with the baby and introduced us all to “baby boy Rodrigo”.

“I started crying and told her that’s really awful of her.

“My mother comforted me and told my sister she is way out of line with the name.

“Sister says I don’t own the name, it’s a common name where we live (it is) and I am going with Rodrigo a middle name anyway, not a first, so it won’t be a problem.

“I told my sister to just change the name to literally anything else.

“She says I’m an AH for suggesting she changes her kid’s identity.”

The mum-to-be, who goes by the username u/Oxandri, is now wondering whether she is in the wrong for the situation.

However, fellow Reddit users were quick to reassure her and insisted that it was in fact her sister who had acted insensitively, not her.

Many Reddit users rushed to the comments in support and explained that it was by no means out of order for her to request a name change.

One person wrote: “While you can’t own a name, it still feels wrong to name your kid the same name as your sister’s dead husband without talking about it first.

“Especially if he died so recently. Maybe if she talked to you about it first, then you’d feel differently.”

Another said: “She should have consulted you if she was considering that name, it’s a constant reminder of your loss along with the fact you had already made it clear it would be the middle name for your child.

“Super insensitive the way she did it as well, and you’d be well within your rights to not let it go. I’m so so sorry for your loss.”
