GILLETTE, Wyo.— A Gillette man was arrested yesterday evening on suspicion of attacking and choking a pregnant woman, police said Wednesday.
Dayne Wells, 23, is charged with felony aggravated assault and felony strangulation of a household member after a 28-year-old female called the police to report he had assaulted her at a Gillette residence around 8 p.m. on June 7, according to Gillette Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson.
The female, who is pregnant, told officers that Wells shoved her against a door, strangled her, and shoved his fist painfully into her jaw and shoulder, and stopped when she struck him, per Wasson.
When interviewed by police, Wells said that he pushed the female into a door after she touched his recent sunburn while attempting to give him a hug, Wasson said, adding that the suspect claimed his hands “slipped” around the female’s throat during the incident.

During the investigation, officers learned that contact between Wells, who is currently on bond, and the female constitutes a bond violation, per Wasson.
Wells was arraigned on the charges before Circuit Court Judge Paul S. Phillips on June 8, who set bond for the 23-year-old at $250,000 cash only given the violent nature of the offenses and the fact that Wells is currently on bond for a similar offense against the same female.
A preliminary hearing has been set for June 16, where the prosecution will need to establish sufficient probable cause to move the case into Campbell County District Court for trial.
