A man kicked and punched his common-law spouse even though she was three months pregnant at the time of the incident, according to Laredo police.

On Dec. 15, Juan Jose Abrego, 28, was served with arrest warrants that charged him with assault of a pregnant person and assault of a family, household member by impeding breath or circulation.

Laredo police officers responded to an assault report at about 12:15 a.m. Oct. 19 in the 1800 block of Garfield Street. A woman stated that her son had assaulted her daughter-in-law. She stated she did not see the assault but heard the commotion outside. Authorities identified the son as Abrego.

The daughter-in-law stated she was sweeping inside the residence while Abrego was outside drinking an alcoholic beverage. Abrego then went inside the residence and asked her why she was sweeping in a bad mood. She told him she was not in a bad mood. Abrego then got upset. He then kicked her and punched her in the face, according to court documents.

The woman then stepped outside while carrying her 4-year-old son. Abrego followed her outside and hit her again, and he tried to strangle her and then threw her on the ground, states the affidavit. She stated she lost consciousness for about 10 seconds. Abrego allegedly started hitting her and kicking her in the stomach. When she yelled for help, Abrego got into his mother’s car and took off. Court documents state that the woman was three months pregnant at the time.
