By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Changing with the times, the Miss Universe pageant will allow mothers and married and pregnant women to compete in the international women’s beauty competition.

In an email to the national organizations that hold beauty pageants leading up to Miss Universe, the Miss Universe Organization Amy Emmerich announced it had decided to allow “women who are or have been married, as well as women who are pregnant or have children” to compete starting 2023 with the 72nd Miss Universe competition.

Emmerich said the Miss Universe Organization continues to “evolve with the changing of times to best represent and support women globally.”

The Miss Universe statement said the decision was based on the surveys the organization conducted earlier this year. It supported its decision on what it termed as ‘recent data’ that showed them the “average age of marriage for women and first-time pregnancy globally begins at 21.”

“The feedback was overwhelming that we all believe women should have agency over their lives, and that a human’s personal decisions should not be a barrier to their success.”

“Despite the difference in our cultures and beliefs, this allows all women to put their fate in their own hands and we will accommodate whoever is Miss Universe accordingly. We look forward to continue welcoming even more aspirational women to our community as a result of these latest changes. We wanted to share this with you now, as you begin preparations for your local pageants for 2023.”

The Colombia Miss Universe Organization already announced that it will apply the decision to its national pageant and has reportedly been followed by Honduras and the Dominican Republic.

There has been no announcement yet from the local organization in charge of Miss Universe Belize. However, this new development is expected to trigger an announcement shortly.
