A farmer and his pregnant wife were allegedly stabbed by a Juba League leader near the victim’s home at village Chanchuri under Kalia upazila in Narail district on Saturday.
The injured couple – Jannat Molla, 45, and his wife Shila Begum, 35, are now undergoing treatment at the Khulna Medical College Hospital.
The alleged attacker, Chanchuri union Juba League general secretary Tourut Molla, reportedly attacked the couple over Union Parishad election-related rivalry, villagers said.
According to witnesses and the police, Tourut Molla contested for the chairman post in the recent UP election on November 28, 2020 and defeated.
Jannat Molla had campaigned for Tourut’s rival candidate in the election, and a conflict erupted between them since then.
Tourut and his associates started chasing Jannat Molla wielding sharp weapons after an altercation with Jannat over a trifling matter at Jannat’s house, on Saturday morning.
They attacked both Jannat and his wife when Jannat’s wife Shila tried to save her husband. The attack left both of them severely injured.
The locals rushed them to Narail Sadar Hospital and later they were transferred to KMCH as their conditions deteriorated.
Kalia police station inspector Ratanuzzaman said that efforts were on to arrest the attackers and a case would be filed in this regard.
Victim Jannat Molla said, ‘Since the UP elections, local Juba League leader Tourut Molla and his men have been harassing us and finally they injured me and my pregnant wife with sharp weapons on Saturday.’
Accused Tourut Molla said, ‘I went at Jannat’s house to help in resolving a small family feud. But I didn’t take any side’.
