PN MP questions why President still hasn’t signed IVF bill

Nationalist MP Ivan Bartolo has said in a video that the amendments related to IVF were presented to the President of Malta a week ago, but up to this day, these amendments have not yet been signed into law.

“Normally, once the laws are presented, the President signs them the next day or in the next two to three days. However, up till now, these amendments have not yet been signed.”

“Why haven’t these amendments been signed by the President of Malta?” Bartolo asked.

During the last Parliamentary sitting before the summer recess, Parliament approved a bill that will see the introduction of pre-implantation genetic testing that will screen for nine serious health conditions. Foetuses found to carry any of these conditions will be frozen.

President George Vella had insisted that the new IVF bill will be signed into law after it was approved by both sides of the House. However, President Vella was not clear on whether he would be signing it himself.

Media houses, including The Malta Independent, pressed President Vella for an answer on who will be signing the bill into law. However, this proved to be futile as Vella refused to give an answer, stating that “it will be signed”, but one has to “wait and see.”

In the video posted on Facebook, Nationalist MP Bartolo explained that once a bill is approved in Parliament, these laws are then passed to the President so that he can sign them.

“I have information that these laws were presented to the President last Monday,” Bartolo said.

Bartolo was one of a number of Nationalist MPs who refused to toe the party line and voted against the amendments.
