Portal hacked, Rs 22 lakh paid to 439 fake pregnant women | Chandigarh News

PANCHKULA: An internal software of women and child development department was hacked, fake 439 pregnant woman beneficiaries prepared and the department duped of Rs 21.95 lakh, prompting the police to register a cheating and forgery case.
Aaru Vashisht, women and child development project officer, said the department provides financial help of Rs 5,000 to pregnant woman in three different installments under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.
A data entry operator working with the department has the charge of checking forms filled in this direction through its portal and secure approval from the project officer before sending the file for approval of money. Once the nod comes. the money is directly transferred to the account of a beneficiary.
Vashisht alleged while verification she found some unknown person had hacked the official portal and added a total of 1,319 (of 439 cases) installments at the time between May 20 to 30 from different anganwadi centres.
Upon cross-checking, it was found out that no case was approved by any supervisor from any of the anganwadi centres across the district and the forms were approved fraudulently by hacking the site of the department. Vashisht said she moved a letter to senior officials but the payment was approved and disbursed to the fake beneficiaries. Vashisht said “All three installments’ approval in one time was never given to anybody, but all fake 439 cases were issued all three installments here.”
Police registered a case under sections 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (whoever fraudulently or dishonestly uses as genuine any document or electronic record) of the IPC .
Sub-inspector Nasib Singh, the investigation officer, said, “The data entry operator who holds the username and password was also on medical leave at the time when the entries were made. We will question the staff and take help of the cyber cell.”
