MANILA, Philippines — A pregnant member of the New People’s Army surrendered to authorities in Agusan del Norte.
Charmaine Coquilla told officials of the Army’s 36th Infantry Battalion (36IB) that she wanted her unborn child to have a better future. Coquilla said her partner was killed in an encounter on April 14.
She said she was deceived into joining the revolutionary movement with a promise to have the opportunity to earn.
Coquilla said she wanted to leave long ago, but was scared about stories of torture that the rebels reportedly do to their comrades who leave the movement.
